Control4 vs. Savant: An Honest Take

Two great platforms, two different personalities. Here's how we actually help clients (and their architects) choose between them.

We get asked this one all the time. Usually it's a client who's done some homework, read a few forums, and is now worried about picking the wrong one.

So here's the honest answer (not a sales pitch for whatever's sitting in our warehouse).

The short version: we install both, we like both, and most projects land on Control4. Here's the longer version.

Control4

Control4 is what we spec on most of our projects. It's the best mix of reliability, integration breadth, and ongoing development out there.

It talks to more third-party gear than anything else we work with: cameras, intercoms, streaming, climate, lighting, audio. The app is clean and does what you expect. And because the dealer network is big, your system is never stuck with one company forever.

The catch? It needs a real programmer. A serious Control4 system isn't a weekend project. Its power comes from how it's set up, and that takes someone who does this every day.

Savant

Savant is our pick for clients who care most about the look and feel. The app is beautiful (honestly, the best-looking interface in the category), and the keypads, remotes, and touchscreens have a premium feel some clients fall in love with.

It's gotten a lot better in the last few years, and we do plenty of Savant installs. It really shines in AV-heavy homes, where the interface gets used all day.

The tradeoffs: it usually costs more than Control4, it integrates with a somewhat narrower list of third-party devices, and it's built around Apple first (Android works, but it's clearly second).

How we actually decide

We start with one question: what are you optimizing for?

If it's the most flexibility, the widest device support, and the best value, it's Control4. If it's the interface itself, a heavy AV focus, and a household that lives on Apple, Savant is worth a serious look.

Both play nicely with Lutron lighting and shades, which is where a lot of the day-to-day magic happens anyway.

For architects, builders, and designers

Here's the part most comparisons skip. The platform decision isn't just the homeowner's. It shows up in your plans.

Keypads and touchscreens differ in size, style, and finish, which affects backboxes, wall layouts, and what the interior designer is signing off on. The equipment room and the wiring backbone look a lot alike either way. But the sooner the platform is picked, the fewer surprises at trim-out.

Our advice: settle it during design development, not after drywall. Bring us in early and we'll walk the client through both (our Lomita showroom runs Control4 and Savant side by side, by appointment).

The part that matters more than the logo

The platform matters. The person programming it matters more.

A great programmer on either system will beat a mediocre one on the other, every time. We're a Control4 and Savant dealer, so we don't need to push you toward one. We'll recommend the one that fits how y'all actually live.
