Living With Josh.ai: Six Months In

We've been installing Josh.ai for two years. Here's the honest, experience-based take on how it performs in daily use in luxury homes.

We started recommending Josh.ai on new builds about two years ago, after spending a year evaluating it in our demo space and on select client projects. Here's the honest version of what we've learned.

What Josh Does Exceptionally Well

Natural language commands for multi-room, multi-system actions. "Hey Josh, set up the living room for a dinner party" — and the lights shift to the dinner scene, the shades lower for privacy, background music starts in the room at a conversation-appropriate level. That single command would require three separate Alexa routines to approximate, and it still wouldn't execute as cleanly.

Context memory within a conversation. "Turn down the music." "A little more." "Actually, turn it off." Josh handles this conversational flow naturally. Most voice systems need you to repeat the full command each time.

Privacy. Josh processes commands locally when possible. The business model isn't advertising, so your commands aren't being logged to build a consumer profile.

Where It Takes Adjustment

The wake word "Hey Josh" takes about a week to feel natural if you're coming from "Alexa." After that, most clients stop noticing it.

Josh's knowledge of non-smart-home questions (weather, general knowledge, timers) is less polished than Amazon or Google's consumer products. For pure smart home control, it's excellent. For "what movies are playing near me," it's not the right tool. We think this is actually fine — Josh does one thing and does it well.

Device coverage is very good but not 100%. Josh integrates with Control4, Savant, Lutron, most camera systems, and most major smart home platforms. If you have an obscure device that doesn't have an integration, you may be waiting on a software update.

What Clients Say

The most common feedback after six months of use: "I can't believe we ever used Alexa." The second most common: "My housekeeper learned the commands in three days." Ease of adoption by household staff and family members who weren't part of the buying decision is a real-world metric that matters.

The Comparison Question

Clients who ask "is it better than Alexa?" are asking the wrong question. It's a different category of product designed for a different use case. Alexa is a consumer convenience device with smart home features bolted on. Josh is a smart home control system that happens to use voice as its primary interface. If your home is professionally designed and integrated, Josh is the right choice.
