Lutron Ketra: The Lighting System That Changes How You Feel at Home

Circadian lighting isn't a trend — it's the direction the entire industry is moving. Ketra is the best implementation of it, and the impact is real.

I started recommending Ketra a few years ago on select projects. Now it's standard on most of what we build. The reason is simple: it works, clients notice the difference, and the underlying science is legitimate.

What Ketra Actually Does

Standard dimmers do one thing: change the brightness of a light. Ketra does two things: change the brightness and change the color temperature. The color of light is measured in Kelvin. Warm light (2700K) is what you expect from incandescent — amber, relaxing, what your brain expects in the evening. Cool light (5000K+) is daylight — bright, blue-leaning, alerting.

Your body uses light as its primary cue for the circadian rhythm. Morning sunlight is cool and blue; it suppresses melatonin and signals your body to be alert. Evening sunlight is warm and red; it allows melatonin to rise and prepares you for sleep. Modern homes lit with fixed-color LEDs at 3000K throughout the day and evening are disrupting this signal constantly.

Ketra's Natural Daylight Sequence automatically shifts the color temperature of every light in your home throughout the day — from a cool, energizing 4000K in the morning, through natural shifts during the day, down to a warm, amber 1800K by evening. You're not thinking about it. The house is just telling your body what time it is.

The Experience in Practice

The most common thing we hear from clients after six months with Ketra is some version of: "I can't explain it, but the house just feels better in the evenings." Sleep quality improving is the most frequently reported change. Easier mornings. Less eye fatigue during daytime work at home.

We've had designers who were initially skeptical — they had spec'd specific warm whites for their design intent — convert completely once they experienced Ketra in person. The system can be programmed to respect the design intent of a space while still doing the circadian shift. You don't have to sacrifice the aesthetic.

Integration with Lutron and Control4

Ketra integrates natively with Lutron Homeworks QSX and with Control4. The circadian tuning layer runs automatically in the background; lighting scenes and manual control work exactly as they always do. A client pressing the "dinner" scene still gets the specific level and ambiance they want — Ketra handles the color temperature layer underneath it.

Is It Worth the Premium?

Ketra fixtures are more expensive than standard LED fixtures. The system cost is higher than standard Lutron. For clients who are already investing in Lutron lighting control, the incremental cost to add Ketra tunable white capability is less than most people expect — and the lived experience return is high.

We offer demos at our showroom in Burbank. If you've never seen the full day/night cycle demonstrated in a properly designed space, it's worth 30 minutes. It changes how you think about lighting in your home.
